Mayor should dedicate himself to “greening” the city
My hope is that the next mayor of Omaha dedicates himself to ‘greening’ the city in large and small ways. Some small scale things that could be done right away are to install recycling bins at Eppley, organize glass pickup at curbside, and create
citywide contests that ask neighborhoods or affinity groups of any kind to track their carbon footprints and develop hyperlocal ideas for reducing our collective carbon impact. On a larger scale, I would like to see the next mayor advocate for more bike friendly streets, perhaps a bike corridor between the Quest Center/North Downtown to the zoo where residents and visitors could use bikes for free to get from one part of town to another, especially in the summer. The mayor should launch a pilot project to put windmills or solar panels on at least one city governmet bulding and figure out which renewables make sense to scale here.
