Develop a “shared frame” or common vision
Here is my question for Omaha’s Next Mayor…
What is the process by which a community comes to a “shared frame” or common vision?
This question grows out of the Young Professionals Summit at which the best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell suggested that successful communities have a shared frame or goal or vision. The example he gave was New York City in the mid-1990s when Mayor Rudy Giuliani led the effort to reduce crime and successfully did so in just 3 years time. Great example, but how did New Yorkers decide that this should be their goal? Was it imposed from the top – an elite group or elected official imposing their agenda on the city – or did it bubble up from the people or a combination of top-down and bottom-up? Was it a conscious and deliberate process or did New Yorkers just come to this organically? Ultimately, how would the Omaha mayoral candidates propose coming to a common vision here in our community?
